Il faut déjà savoir qu'il y a trois sortes de pow wow:
1) Le compétitif : auquel chaque danseur porte un numéro. La compétition étant d'être le meilleur danseur et avoir le plus beau costume.
2) Le spirituel : pratiqué lors de rituel de guérison ( ex) quand une tribu fait une demande aux esprits.
3) Le socio-culturel : tous les danseurs, de n'importe quelle catégorie danse pour le plaisir afin de favoriser les rencontres entres les différentes nations et tribus.
Si vous assistez à un pow wow :
On s'attend à ce que tous les invités, participants et visiteurs souscrivent aux règles et aux protocoles du circuit. Les photos pendant le défilé de drapeaux, prières, chansons d'honneur et quand un individu honore un tambour ne devraient pas être prises. Des invités sont invités à tenir et enlever votre chapeau pour certaines chansons. Vous ne devez pas enlever votre chapeau si vous avez une plume d'aigle dans elle. La tradition doit respecter les chefs et les aînés en leur accordant la priorité pour tous les sujets d'étiquette. Ne vous serrez pas autour des batteurs. Demandez toujours la permission avant de faire tous les enregistrements. Les enfants sont bienvenus pour apprécier cet événement, mais ne peuvent pas jouer en cercle sacré. Des participants sont invités à respecter le directeur d'arène et principal des danses et la danseuse principale des femmes. Respectez le travail du comité de sécurité car ils ont passés beaucoup de temps à l’organisation. Observez ce que le maître des cérémonies énonce pendant les reproductions sonores.
